ABC Signature Studios To Create New Series “Phony”
ABC Signature Studios is working on a new project called “Phony”, which is a half-hour project from “Marcel The Shell With Shoes On” co-writer Nick Paley.
“Phony” is a coming-of-age mystery described as Freaks and Geeks trapped in The Twilight Zone. It follows Sonny, a popular high school kid who wakes up after a strange car accident and discovers his mom has been replaced by an impostor.
According to Deadline, Hulu won the bidding war, which was in a six-way bidding way. The project has been given a script-to-series commitment, with a large, high-six/low-seven-figure penalty if the project doesn’t go ahead. With the series being created by ABC Signature Studios and released on Hulu in the United States, it’s likely that this series will be released as a Star Original internationally, though nothing about this project has yet been made official yet.
ABC Signature Studio’s Drew Goddard, will be an executive producer on the project. He has previously been the writer of “The Martian” and the creator of the Marvel “Daredevil” series.
Nick Paley will be an executive producer, along with Charlie Alderman through his newly formed Charlie’s Production Company, as well as Sarah Esberg through Goddard’s ABC Signature-based Goddard Textiles production company.
