Disney+ Teases New ESPN Hub Launching In Australia & New Zealand

Over the past year, ESPN has become a bigger part of Disney+ following the launch of the ESPN hub on Disney+ in Latin America and the addition of ESPN On Disney+ in the United States and the upcoming launch of ESPN flagship within Disney+ later this year.

For the past few years, Disney has been adding select ESPN documentaries on Disney+ worldwide and it looks like the expansion of ESPN into Disney+ around the world is underway.

Today, I’ve had multiple Disney+ subscribers in Australia and New Zealand contact me today saying that they’ve had a pop-up appear within Disney+ stating that the ESPN hub is coming soon to Disney+ in Australia and New Zealand.

No other details about the launch of the new ESPN hub have been announced yet, such as when it will happen, but it does state that all subscribers will be getting access to it.

Currently, ESPN operates slightly differently on Disney+ in the United States and Latin America. In Latin America, ESPN is included in the Disney+ subscription, whereas in the US, an ESPN hub with limited content is available for all subscribers. However, to get access to all of the ESPN+ content, subscribers need an extra subscription. The upcoming ESPN Flagship service will also be an additional charge.

Back in July 2023, Disney signed a multi-year deal with Foxtel for ESPN, which looks likely to be expiring in July, following the reveal up this pop-up message.   The Sydney Morning Herald recently stated that Disney+ is expected to introduce live sports content in Australia.

It’s likely that other countries will also be getting an ESPN hub soon, such as in Europe and the Middle East, since the stand-alone ESPN Player closed down a couple of years ago and Disney has been picking up worldwide rights for more sports.

Sports content is now being seen as a core strategy for Disney, which is looking to offer different types of content to its subscribers.  It seems now as if the expansion of ESPN on Disney+ is slowly working its way around the world, especially as they’ve been picking up more global rights for some sports, plus have a vast amount of documentaries and studio shows constantly being released.  Only this past week, Disney confirmed a new show called “SC+” would be exclusive to Disney+, and that would fit in perfectly on the ESPN hub globally.

Do you think the launch of ESPN will help Disney+?  Let me know on social media!
