Once again, Disney is looking into its back catalogue of established franchises for upcoming movies, as 20th Century Studios is looking to bring back “The Maze Runner” for another film.

20th Century Studios has already created a trilogy of films, which were released between 2014 and 2018. The movies are based on the best-selling books by James Dashner.

In the first movie, Thomas, who Dylan O’Brien played, wakes up trapped in a massive, ever-changing maze with a group of boys who have no memory of the outside world. Facing dangerous obstacles at every turn, Thomas and the others must race to piece together clues in order to discover their true purpose…and find a way out before it’s too late!

The sequels ended up revealing that they were living in a dystopian world with evil government organizations and foul corporations.

Back at a Disney presentation at CinemaCon in April 2019, Disney revealed it was developing a new movie in the franchise, but since then, we’ve not heard anything more.

But today, THR has revealed that Disney is in negotiations with Jack Paglen to write a script for the upcoming film. It is not going to be a complete reboot of the franchise, nor is it a direct sequel. Instead, it will be a continuation of the story. Jack has previously worked on “Transcendence” and “Alien: Covenant.”

The upcoming “Maze Runner” film will be produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, who worked on the original trilogy. Wes Ball, who previously directed the original trilogy, will also join the producers.

It’s unclear if this new film will be released in cinemas or directly onto Disney+, though it’s likely, with Disney’s refocus on theatrical releases, that it won’t premiere on Disney+.

The previous three “Maze Runner” movies are available to stream on Disney+ in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
