It’s the start of a brand new week and time to take a look at what’s coming to Disney+ in Canada this week, which includes the release of new seasons three popular shows, plus a new documentary from National Geographic and much more.

Cult Massacre: One Day In Jonestown

On 18 November 1978, in the Guyanese agricultural commune of Jonestown, 918 people either committed suicide or were forcibly killed. Many, including a third that were minors, comprised the cult group Peoples Temple. There were also collateral victims, including a US Congressman investigating the cult’s leader Rev. Jim Jones, who had formed the religious order in Indianapolis in 1955. It combined Christian revivalism with a warped form of socialism. Jones’ activities attracted criticism in the US and to avoid censure he relocated the group to Guyana in 1977. Marian Mohamed’s series, the latest instalment of the acclaimed One Day in America franchise, traces the cult’s origins, the activities that attracted the interest of US media and law enforcement, its move to Guyana and the subsequent massacre. It’s an impressive example of investigative filmmaking, bringing a fresh perspective to a chilling moment in recent American history.

Mariana van Zeller explores the complex inner-workings of the global underworld, black and informal markets.

Uncle Samsik (S1, New Episodes)

Set in 1960s Korea, the series follows Kim San, an ambitious idealist who is driven to turn his country’s fortunes around. A recipient of an Albright Scholarship, San wants nothing more than to transform his country into an industrial nation and deliver an American level of affluence to the people of Korea. Determined to become a success, San attracts the attention of Pak Doochill (Uncle Samsik), a shady fixer who adapts to any situation and takes whatever steps necessary to help him accomplish his goals. Together, the pair will form an uneasy alliance, navigating the complexities of the established system, united by their shared goal of a prosperous future.

Will Trent (S2)

Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling books, the series follows Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. As a child, Trent was abandoned and was forced to endure a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. Now that he is in a position to make a difference, Trent is determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was. His personal motivation and background contribute to Will Trent having the highest clearance rate in the GBI.
