In 1977, the first Star Wars film was released and changed the film world forever, with a unique take on science fiction and groundbreaking special effects.  The film tells the story of Luke Skywalker, who is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and the evil Empire.

Over the next decade, Lucasfilm released two more films in the classic trilogy, which was followed up at the end of the nineties with a prequel trilogy, which told the story of Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader.   And then, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, a whole new era of Star Wars began with new films and, for the first time, live-action series.

Due to the number of films and series released, it can be difficult to know exactly how to watch them.   You can watch the Star Wars universe in two ways, either in Release Order or Timeline Order.

  • Release Order – This is the order in which the films, shorts and series were released, either in cinemas or on Disney+.
  • Timeline Order – This is the order in which the events took place.

Personally, I’d always suggest watching the Star Wars films in release order, starting with the classic trilogy, which, rather confusingly, are episodes 4, 5 and 6.   I’d also recommend starting with the films before diving into the Disney+ shows or animated series, as these generally require some background knowledge of what happened in the films.
