R.L. Stine Shares His Picks for Future “Goosebumps” Adaptations
Today, Disney has released a brand new season of the popular “Goosebumps” series called “Goosebumps: The Vanishing” on Disney+ around the world.
“Goosebumps: The Vanishing” begins when twins Cece and Devin Brewer are sent to spend a summer in Gravesend, Brooklyn, with their divorced dad. A threat is stirring, and they quickly realize that dark secrets are among them, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. As they delve into the unknown, Cece, Devin and their friends – Alex, CJ and Frankie – find themselves entangled in the chilling tale of four teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994.
Published by Scholastic, “Goosebumps” is one of the bestselling book series of all time, selling more than 400 million books in print in 32 languages. . The new season draws on elements from some of the most popular books, including “Stay Out of the Basement, “The Haunted Car,” “Monster Blood,” “The Girl Who Cried Monster,” “The Ghost Next Door,” “Welcome to Camp Nightmare” and more.
During a promotional interview with Deadline, “Goosebumps” creator, R.L Stine was asked what other books he would like to see adapted for another season, to which he replied:
Well, they’ve kind of done my favorites. They did The Haunted Mask in the first season, and they’ve done all the Slappy stuff in the first season, so they’ve kind of done it. At some point, I would like to see maybe some of the newer Goosebumps. You know, I’m still going. I just signed on to write six more books, six more Goosebumps books. So I’d love to see some of the newer stuff. There’s Goosebumps House of Shivers, that’s what it’s called now. It just came out called Goblin Monday, which is my first goblin book. I’d love to see that adapted.
It’s not yet been announced if there is going to be another season of “Goosebumps,” and it’s unlikely we will know for a while, as Disney generally likes to see how the latest season performs before committing. The first season was a big enough success for the second season to be greenlit, as the first episode of the first season pulled pulled in 4.2 million total views globally on Disney+ and Hulu in its first three days
and this is a show which is created by Sony for Disney, is able to be created in a short amount of time (the new season was only announced in February 2024) and is based on an established franchise that captures interest from a larger audience.
Roger’s Take: Over 240 “Goosebumps” books have been released since 1992, and with more books being released each year, this means there are plenty of different stories that could be explored in future seasons of “Goosebumps”. Also, with so many different stories, some are naturally going to be easier to adapt to television than others. There is also the added bonus of adapting newer stories, which might help ignite interest in younger readers in the newer books rather than just the more well-known stories.
You can stream “Goosebumps” and “Goosebumps: The Vanishing” on Disney+ around the world.
