Nielsen has released its latest “Gauge” data update for March 2025, which gives a broad overview of how Americans watch television, including linear and streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu.

Earlier this year, Nielsen made a change to its Gauge data, bringing together all of Disney’s three streaming services, Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ into a single entity called “Disney Streaming” since all three could be viewed within Disney+.

Nielsen has now made a similar adjustment for Paramount and Warner Brothers Discovery, with Paramount+ and Pluto represented as “Paramount Streaming” and Max and Discovery+ defined as “Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming.”

According to the latest Nielsen report, the NCAA tournament helped drive cable’s traditional March increase, the Oscars stood out for broadcast, and in a competitive month of high-profile streaming releases, the top programs in March were represented by seven different streaming platforms.

Streaming continues to become the dominant way that people are watching entertainment on TV, with cable becoming less important month on month.  As streaming viewership increased 0.3%.

Disney picked up 5% of the usage between Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, just behind Netflix and above Amazon Prime Video.  Disney’s viewership is up 0.2% up on the previous month.

With the winter season behind us, the overall television viewing was down 6% on February and for the first time ever in a monthly Gauge report—the 10 most-watched streaming titles in March were distributed by seven different platforms: Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Paramount+, Netflix and Apple TV+.

  1. Reacher (Prime Video) – 6.6 billion minutes
  2. Family Guy (Hulu/Disney+) 4.8
  3. Bluey (Disney+) 4.8
  4. The White Lotus (Max) 4.5
  5. 1923 (Paramount+) 3.9
  6. Moana 2 (Disney+) 3.9
  7. Running Point (Netflix) 3.7
  8. Love Is Blind (Netflix) 3.5
  9. Adolescence (Netflix) 3.3
  10. Severance (Apple TV+) 3.3

Roger’s Take: The monthly Gauge data from Nielsen is always a good indication of how the American audience is consuming its television.  It’s also interesting to see the total viewership for March with so many different streaming services making it onto the top 10.
