Marvel Executive Teases More “Hawkeye” On Disney+
One of the initial first shows to be released on Disney+ by Marvel Studios was “Hawkeye”, which debuted on the streaming service in late 2021 and saw Jeremy Renner return as Hawkeye.
Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” is an original new series set in post-blip New York City where former Avenger Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.
The series introduced Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and Alaqua Cox as “Echo”. Also making a surprise return for “Hawkeye” was Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprised his role of Kingpin.
Since the show premiered in 2021, we’ve seen Kate Bishop make a small cameo in “The Marvels” to set up a future “Young Avengers” show or film, and we’ve seen both Kingpin and Echo return for the “Hawkeye” spin-off series, “Echo”.
Since the release of “Hawkeye”, there are multiple reasons why a second season hasn’t yet happened. Originally, Marvel Studios was treating most of its Disney+ shows almost like limited series, where they were a one and done, where it would move onto other characters and stories.
However, with Marvel Studios drastically changing strategies following negative feedback from fans over the quality and quantity of new releases, plus a push by Disney to save money, Marvel is now looking to make cheaper shows that could run for multiple seasons.
Plus, between the pandemic, writers’ strike, and Jeremy Renner suffering from a terrible accident involving a snowplough that almost killed him, there hasn’t been much talk of a second season.
During a recent interview with EW to promote the new series, “Daredevil: Born Again”, Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel, spoke about a potential for a second season of “Hawkeye”.
“Hawkeye is another one that feels like you can make a second season of that show because it’s Christmas, because it’s Clint and Kate. You can kind of revisit it whenever, and we’re looking for opportunities to do that. But as we develop things for the future, I think they’re going to be designed to be multiple seasons, have more of a pattern, and be able to be released annually.”
Roger’s Take: “Hawkeye” feels like a perfect series for Disney+. These characters will fit a much more grounded street-level style since they don’t have superpowers, and the show should be able to be made on a much lower budget than something involving lots of special effects. The problem is that there are only so many shows they can put out each year and only so many places to put all the different characters they’ve introduced. I’d love to see Hailee return as Kate Bishop, potentially in a “Young Avengers/Champions” series with some of the other younger superheroes, but maybe Marvel is doing a little testing of the waters to see if people would like to see more adventures with Clint and Kate.
“Hawkeye” is available to stream on Disney+.
