One of the biggest surprises in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was Charlie Cox’s cameo as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, who appeared as a lawyer to help Peter Parker after Misterio revealed he was Spider-Man at the end of “Far From Home”.

This has led to much speculation about whether we could see Spider-Man appear in the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again”, especially following the release of the recent animated show “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.

While Disney was able to clear up some of the legal issues for some of its characters like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, following the purchase of 20th Century Studios. The situation with Spider-Man is much more complicated due to a long-standing contract with Sony, which pre-dates Disney buying Marvel.

During a recent interview with Phase Zero to promote the new Disney+ show, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, confirmed why we won’t see Spider-Man appearing in any Disney+ show.

You know I’m not sure exactly what the rules are, but I think [Sony] have long-form television rights, I don’t know if that means he can show up. You can do like 30-minute animation I think,”

The situation with Sony and Spider-Man is pretty complicated, especially once Marvel Studios did a deal to bring Tom Holland into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in movies such as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Captain America: Civil War”.

Since Sony Pictures distributed the three “Spider-Man” films featuring Tom Holland, it’s why they aren’t available to stream on Disney+.

That deal also resulted in Sony Pictures avoiding featuring a live-action Spider-Man in its own comic-book movies, “Venom”, “Morbius”, “Madame Web”, and “Kraven The Hunter”.  This decision hasn’t worked out for Sony, as those movies struggled to get audiences interested, with many of them being box office failures.  Sony has had lots of success with its animated “Spider-Man” films and is currently filming a new “Spider-Noir” series for Amazon with Nicolas Cage starring in it.

Tom Holland is scheduled to start filming a new Spider-Man movie later this summer in the UK. Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the new movie, which will be released in cinemas on July 31st, 2026.

Roger’s Take: It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to hear Spider-Man can’t appear in Disney+ shows, but it’s amazing how many times a day I get questions about the Spider-Man films being added to Disney+  or comments that Sony owns Spider-Man.  Since most people don’t understand the situation with Sony, since to them, Spider-Man is a Marvel character.
