Jeremy Renner Teases Second Season Of Disney+ Original “Hawkeye” Series
Back in 2021, Marvel Studios released a brand new series on Disney+ with Jeremy Renner reprising his role of “Hawkeye”, giving him an opportunity to expand his character in his own series.
The series was set in post-blip New York City, where former Avenger Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.
However, shortly after the release of “Hawkeye”, Jeremy Renner was involved in a near-fatal accident involving a snow plough, which resulted in him having to step away from acting for a while to recover from eight broken ribs, broken ankles, a broken right knee, a broken left leg tibia, a broken right clavicle and shoulder and more.
Since then, we’ve not seen Hawkeye return to our screens, though there was a brief cameo of Kate Bishop in “The Marvels” and earlier this year, after Marvel released a video showing all the names of the actors set to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday”, Jeremy revealed that Marvel wanted to do a second season of “Hawkeye”, but wanted to pay him half as much money to do it.
In a recent interview with Empire, Jeremy Renner was much more open to the idea of returning for a second season of “Hawkeye” or appearing in future “Avengers” films, stating:
“I’m always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character. I’m sure we’ll end up doing Season 2 [of ‘Hawkeye’], and do other things. And I’m happy to do it. My body’s getting ready for something like that. I don’t know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights.”
When asked about his health, Renner explained how he’s been recovering from the accident and is ready to once again suit up as one of the original “Avengers”.
“Having health and wellness be such a central part of my life, that’s what’s gotten me back. And even as I age, I just feel stronger than I’ve been. I have some issues, and tendon issues and certain limitations of flexibility and mobility, but I spent a lot of time on getting better and stronger, and I wouldn’t if I didn’t get crushed.”
Roger’s Take: I’ve little doubt that Hawkeye is going to eventually return to our screens, likely in one of the upcoming “Avengers” movies, as Marvel needs some of its core characters back to appeal to the general audience that’s been turned away by the introduction of too many characters.
There’s also no doubt that there has been some adverse reaction from Jeremy’s interview earlier this year, and with his health no longer a problem, it makes sense to bring him back. I could also see more adventures of “Hawkeye” on Disney+, given its focus on a street-level hero that fits Marvel’s budget and multiple-season format. It could also be a way to bring in other characters, such as Kate Bishop, Kingpin, or Echo. While we are only going to see one or two live-action shows released on Disney+ each year, leaning in on characters like Daredevil and Hawkeye, could be precisely the direction the TV show side needs to go in, to keep fans entertained, while also appealing to a larger audience.
While we wait to see where Hawkeye appears next, you can see his previous adventures in the “Hawkeye” series and the “Avengers” movies on Disney+ now.
