Is “A Court Of Thorns And Roses” Hulu Series Still Happening?
It’s been nearly three years since 20th Television revealed it was working on a new series adaptation of the fantasy book series, “A Court Of Thorns And Roses”, which tells the story of a huntress who agrees to travel to a magical realm with a faerie lord in return for her family’s safety, only to fall for him and ultimately fight for that love when an ancient curse threatens to destroy the faerie and human realms.
The new series is being created by Ron Moore, who has previously worked as the showrunner on “Outlander”, “Battlestar Galactica” and the upcoming Disney+ Original series “Swiss Family Robinson” and “The Society of Explorers and Adventurers”.
Last week at the Television Critics Association, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich was asked about the series, to which he replied:
“That show has been in development, but I don’t have any news to share today,”
TVLine recently revealed that work on the series was no longer moving forward and wasn’t even being shopped around to other platforms.
However, just hours after this news broke, Variety quickly reported that while technically the series is still in development at Hulu. However, the project is believed to no longer be in active development, so the future of the project still seems very murky.
Back in November, Ron Moore spoke on the upcoming series while promoting the new season of Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind”.
“It’s still in development. We’ve written some scripts, and we’re just sort of waiting. I think the whole town is kind of waiting to see if we have actors before things really move forward, but it’s still in development.”
With the Hollywood strikes now over, many projects are moving forward, but since this show was initially announced by 20th Television for Hulu and internationally on Disney+, there have been many changes within Disney.
Since Bob Iger’s return as CEO, he has gone on a drastic cost-cutting initiative to try to reduce costs, and one way that’s being done is to cut back on how much general entertainment programming is being made. To offer a more curated lineup of original programming and to focus more on franchises and established IP.
Back when the original series was announced, the author of “A Court Of Thorns And Roses”, Sarah J. Maas, took to Instagram to confirm the series was in development. However, that social media post has since been deleted.
While the show might still technically be in development, over three years later, it doesn’t seem like the script are even complete, and Rob’s overall deal with Disney so far, hasn’t resulted in any new series. But, development time on new shows does sometimes take a while.
