First Look At Jon Favreau’s “Lion” Series

Four years ago, Disney announced that National Geographic was teaming up with acclaimed director Jon Favreau, who’s behind Marvel’s “Iron Man”, Star Wars’ “The Mandalorian” and Disney’s “The Lion King”, for a brand new documentary series called “Lion”.

This new show will see Jon team up with the world’s foremost natural history producer, Mike Gunton, and the BBC Studios Natural History Unit to create a landmark series about one of the world’s most majestic creatures – Lions.

“Lion” will follow a single pride for an unprecedented four years, which is why its taken so long to arrive on our screens. In this intimate and emotional series, the filmmakers will use cutting-edge technology to explore the heart-stopping challenges facing an entire species, all told through a compelling, serialised dramatic story of a single group of characters.

Disney has released a new poster for the series, leaning in on the connection with the live-action version of the classic animated film, “The Lion King”, with the tag line of “Rise Of A King” and a logline that says “The journey of a real lion king begins”.

It was also confirmed that the series will feature music composed by Hans Zimmer, who has previously worked on the original animated “Lion King” film, along with “Gladiator”, “Pirates Of The Caribbean” and “Batman Begins”.

“Lion” will be coming soon to the National Geographic linear channel, along with Disney+ and Hulu.

The executive producers are Favreau and Gunton (“Planet Earth II,” “Dynasties”), and the series editor is Simon Blakeney (“Life,” “Dynasties”); each brings unrivalled experience, an innate passion for emotional storytelling and a deep love of lions to this television event.

Roger’s Take:  With the release of the first poster, it probably won’t be too long until Disney starts promoting this show more, with the release of a trailer and confirmation of a release date.  With World Lion Day set to take place on August 10th, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the show drop around that time.
