Disney+ Nominated For 15 BAFTA TV Awards
The nominations for this year’s BAFTA Television awards have been announced and Disney+ has had a fantastic haul, with 15 nominations for its original programming.
“Rivals” is part of Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles, and is packed full of wit, romantic entanglements, sex and unforgettable characters. The story is set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England in the ruthless world of independent television. The show was nominated for six different awards, including:
- Best Actor – David Tennant
- Supporting Actress – Katherine Parkinson
- Make Up & Hair Design
- Original Music
- Production Design
- Scripted Casting
The public is also getting to decide on the most memorable moments from British television over the past year, and “Rivals” has been nominated for its scene involving Rupert Campbell-Black and Sarah Stratton getting caught in a game of naked tennis.
The FX show, “Say Nothing”, which is a gripping story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, was also nominated for four awards, including:
- International
- Leading Actress – Lola Petticrew
- Supporting Actress – Maxine Peake
- Photography & Lighting
FX also picked up another nomination for its smash-hit series, “Shogun”, in the Best International category and for Photography & Lighting.
Bilal Hasna also picked up a Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in the hit comedy series, “Extraordinary”. While the original documentary series, “In Vogue: The 90s” was nominated in the Best Factiual Entertainment category.
There were also many craft nominations announced, with National Geographic’s “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story” getting nominated for two awards, Best Director in the Factual Category and Photography.
Plenty of other British shows have done well in this year’s nominations, including eight for Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” and six for both ITV’s “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”
This year’s event will be hosted by Alan Cumming and it will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 11th May 2025.
Roger’s Take: “Rivals” has been one of the biggest successes for a British Original for Disney+ so far, with a huge marketing campaign and lots of social media buzz. Hopefully, it will pick up some awards, but it’s got some stiff competition. While I personally think the naked tennis scene was very funny, unfortunately, its going up against some juggernaut shows from the main broadcast networks, which pulled in far bigger viewing numbers.
