Last year, just prior to the Presidential Election, Disney+ launched ABC News Live, a 24/7 multi-award-winning, premium streaming news channel for live newscasts, breaking news, live events, and in-depth special reports.

During a recent quarterly investor Q&A session, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked how important was news to the overall product that they offer, to which he replied:

We like the opportunity to make room for our news output, both the ABC News output and the output of our local stations as part of the app experience. With improved technology, we’re now offering live streams on the Disney plus Hulu app and news will does occupy one of those streams and it will continue to be a feature of our overall Disney plus and Hulu offering. And it’s also something that differentiates us from some of the others in the space.

Disney has had some great success with its ABC News content on Disney+. It’s certainly content that can continue to run on the traditional ABC linear channel and find a home on streaming. It’s also ever-changing and cheap to produce, and with neither Amazon, Apple, or Netflix involved in news content, it does give them an edge in some ways.

Currently, ABC News Live is only available on Disney+ in the United States, and while many of the documentaries from ABC News Studios are released internationally, most of the shows that air on ABC News Live, such as “Good Morning America”, also aren’t released on Disney+ globally.

However, these shows, along with ABC News Live, is available to stream on YouTube. There could be options for international growth, though ABC News Live is very US-centric, and there might be more restrictions and rules regarding operating a news channel directly through Disney+.
