Disney+ Adds 1.4 Million Subscribers
Today, the Walt Disney Company released its latest quarterly results for the fiscal second quarter of 2025, which means we get an updated look at the number of subscribers Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ have.
This gives us a clear indication of how the apps are doing, especially with growth or decline in subscriber numbers. These subscriber numbers are based on how many there were on March 29th, 2025.
Since the last quarter, Disney+ was able to add 1.4 million subscribers around the world, with Hulu also being able to add an additional 1.3 million subscribers, giving them a boost of 2.5 million subscribers to their streaming services in the last quarter. Disney has also warned that there will likely only be a modest increase in subscribers in the next quarter.
Just as important to the company is how much money the streaming business makes and Disney has revealed that their Direct-to-Consumer operating income increased from $289 million to $336 million.
The last quarter was the first not to include subscriber numbers from Disney+ Hotstar in India, since Star India was merged into Reliance, resulting in the rebranding of the service to JioHotstar. Hence the appearance of millions fewer subscribers than a year or more ago.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement:
Our outstanding performance this quarter—with adjusted EPS(1) up 20% from the prior year driven by our Entertainment and Experiences businesses—underscores our continued success building for growth and executing across our strategic priorities,” said Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “Following an excellent first half of the fiscal year, we have a lot more to look forward to, including our upcoming theatrical slate, the launch of ESPN’s new DTC offering, and an unprecedented number of expansion projects underway in our Experiences segment. Overall, we remain optimistic about the direction of the company and our outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year.”
Disney has also provided a detailed breakdown per region: (Million)
- Disney+ – Domestic (US & Canada) – 57.8
- Disney+ – International – 68.2
- Disney+ Global – 124.6
- Hulu – Million Subscribers (US Only) – 50.3
To compare, here are the subscription numbers (Millions) from February’s Investor Call:
- Disney+ – Domestic (US & Canada) – 56.8
- Disney+ – International – 67.8
- Disney+ Global – 124.6
- Hulu – Million Subscribers (US Only) – 49.0
Roger’s Take: It’s been a good, solid month for Disney+ subscriber growth, as the numbers are going in the right direction, but it’ll be interesting to see how Disney can push forward to increase that number, which ultimately will increase the streaming division’s profits. They could launch in more countries or offer more promotions, but the biggest shift is going to take place when Disney eventually merges its streaming services together.
