“Crimson Tide” Sequel In Early Development
Thirty years ago, Disney released “Crimson Tide”, which tells the story of what happens in the midst of a global crisis, the USS Alabama receives an unconfirmed order to launch its nuclear missiles, signalling the start of World War III. The tension quickly rises as the sub’s respected commander and his brilliant executive officer clash over the validity of their orders…battling each other for control of the sub. As this epic struggle rages under the sea, Crimson Tide brings motion picture excitement to a new level — and you to the edge of your seat.
Disney often dives into its vast back catalogue for new projects, and following the success of the sequel to “Top Gun”, Jerry Bruckheimer, who was a producer on “Crimson Tide”, revealed during an interview to promote “F1″ on “The Rich Eisen Show”, that he is developing a “Crimson Tide” sequel.
“We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water,”
The original “Crimson Tide” film starred Denzel Washington and the late Gene Hackman. During the interview, Jerry revealed that he might be able to convince Denzel to take another trip beneath the waves.
“If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it,”
According to Variety, a source close to Denzel Washington confirmed that any participation in “Crimson Tide 2” is script-dependent, and currently, there’s no finished screenplay yet.
Since the original film was released over thirty years ago, many of the people who worked on the movie have sadly passed away, including director Tony Scott and co-writer Robert Towne.
Disney has also not officially announced that the sequel is in development, and since it’s still in the early stages, it may be a while before we see this film hit our screens. Denzel Washington has also hinted that he is getting ready to retire soon, though he will be working on the upcoming third “Black Panther” movie for Marvel, so he could potentially be persuaded to do another movie before retiring.
The original “Crimson Tide” movie is available to stream now on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
