“The Artful Dodger” To End After Three Seasons

Disney has announced that it has greenlit the Australian Original drama series, “The Artful Dodger”, for a third and final season, which will feature more grit, bigger heists and bolder hijinks.

The series is an irreverent follow-up to Dickens’ Oliver Twist, exploring the adult double life of Charles Dickens’ famous prince of thieves. Set in 1850’s Australia, in the lively colony of Port Victory, we meet Jack Dawkins, The Artful Dodger, who’s transferred his fast fingers as a pickpocket to the nimble skilled fingers of a surgeon. Dodger’s past returns to haunt him with the arrival of Fagin, luring him back into a world of crime. A greater threat – to Dodger’s heart – is Lady Belle, the Governor’s daughter, determined to become the colony’s first female surgeon. From heists to life-and-death surgeries, from soirées to street violence, this is a tale of reinvention, betrayal, redemption and love with a twist.

Filming on the third season is set to begin in a few months in Sydney, Australia, so expect to see the show drop onto Hulu and Disney+ in 2027.

The all-star cast, which includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Queen’s Gambit, Wolf Hall), David Thewlis(Landscapers, Avatar: Fire and Ash) and Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble, Never Goin’ Back), are returning in their respective roles as Dr. Jack Dawkins, Norbet Fagin and Lady Belle Fox.

Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures’ Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner return as Executive Producers/Producers with Chris Martin-Jones (A Place to Call Home, Home and Away) as Series Producer. Ben Young (The Twelve, Clickbait)and Ben C. Lucas (The Survivors, High Country) return as Directors.

Multi-award-winner and BAFTA nominee, Andrew Knight (Hacksaw Ridge, Jack Irish, Rake), will return to lead the scripting as Executive Producer, alongside Dan Knight (Irreverent) as Script Producer, who has written across all three seasons. Andrew Knight was also the first season’s Co-Script Lead and Co-Executive Producer.

The first two seasons of “The Artful Dodger” are now streaming on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the U.S and on Disney+ around the world.

Roger’s Take:  It’s great to see the show has been renewed for a third season, and at least with the confirmation that this will be the final season, the writers can also incorporate that into the storyline, so everything is wrapped up, allowing the audience to close the chapter on this unique take on the classic Dickens character.  Hopefully, Disney+ continues to invest in more
