20th Century Studios Developing “The Fly” Spin-Off Movie
With horror movies proving to be a big hit with audiences, Disney is once again diving into its back catalogue for future projects. 20th Century Studios is developing a brand new film based on the classic horror franchise “The Fly.”
The film is about a scientist who creates a teleportation machine and decides to test it. However, a fly enters the machine, and their genes get spliced. Gradually, he finds himself transforming into a grotesque creature.
George Langelaan’s original short story from 1957 has already been translated to the big screen on multiple occasions, with a film starring Vincent Price was released in 1958, with two sequels “Return of the Fly” and “Curse of the Fly” released in 1959 and 1965.
In 1986, David Cronenberg remade “The Fly” with Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, and John Getz starring in it. A sequel, “The Fly 2”, was released a couple of years later, which told the story of the scientist’s son was also released.
According to Deadline, the new film is going to be written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu, who has previously worked on “Nanny” and “Two Sentence Horror Stories”. It will be produced by Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping.
This new movie will not be a direct reboot of the 1980s version of “The Fly” and will be set within the universe of the original film.
It’s unknown when the new version of “The Fly” will be released. However, I’d expect it to get a theatrical release, rather than straight to Hulu/Disney+ because horror movies are generally doing very well in cinemas, as long as 20th Century Studios can keep the budget down.
The 1980s version of “The Fly” is available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
