“Witch Mountain” Disney+ Series Cancelled
Back in 2022, Disney announced that it had given a greenlight for a pilot for a new series for Disney+ based on the classic franchise, “Witch Mountain”.
The series was set to be a modern reinvention of the cult classic that takes place in the shadow of “Witch Mountain,” following two teens that develop strange abilities and discover their sleepy suburb may not be as idyllic as it seems.
Disney had announced that Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World: Dominion”) was going to star in the leading role as “Audrey”. However, this weekend during a panel at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, which was moderated by Collider‘s Maggie Lovitt, Bryce confirmed that the series wasn’t going ahead.
“It’s not happening, which is disappointing. It was a really great groove, and we really all enjoyed shooting it here in Toronto. Some things make it, and some things don’t, and that’s the unfortunate truth of this industry.”
The series was also going to star Isabel Gravitt (“The Watcher”), Levi Miller (“Streamline”), Bianca “b” Norwood (“We Crashed”) and Jackson Kelly (“Straight Man”).
Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas co-wrote the pilot and were executive producers on the project. Augustine Frizzell (“Euphoria”) directed the pilot episode and was also an executive producer. John Fox and John Davis of Davis Entertainment also was executive producing the show as well as Gary Marsh. It was produced by ABC Signature.
Over the years, Disney has released five movies within the “Witch Mountain” franchise, with the first film “Escape to Witch Mountain” released in 1975 and most recently in 2009, with “Race to Witch Mountain”, which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Disney also tried rebooting the franchise in 1995 with a straight-to-TV remake of the original film, but “Witch Mountain” was put back on the shelf until the most recent movie.
Roger’s Take: With Disney drastically cutting back on the number of original shows it makes for Disney+ and having not heard anything about this project in over 18 months, it’s not a surprise to hear the show isn’t happening. It’s good now that we know it’s cancelled.
