Searchlight Pictures’ latest film is “Poor Things”, which comes from filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

The film stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Suzy Bemba, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter, Vicki Pepperdine, Margaret Qualley, and Hanna Schygulla.

“Poor Things” is based on the book by Alasdair Gray. The screenplay was written by Tony McNamara, making this the second collaboration between Lanthimos and McNamara (THE FAVOURITE). The movie was produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Emma Stone.


When Is “Poor Things” Released?

Much like many Searchlight Pictures releases, this film has a stretched-out release schedule around the world. “Poor Things” is being released exclusively in theaters in the United States and Canada on December 8th 2023.

“Poor Things” will be released in cinemas in Australia on Boxing Day, 26th December 2023, and in New Zealand, the film will follow on New Year’s Day. In the UK and Ireland, it’ll be released a little later on January 12, 2023.

Initially, the film was going to be released in September 2023, but it was delayed due to the actor’s strike.


When Will “Poor Things” Be On Disney+?

Currently, no official Disney+ release date has yet been announced.

In the United States, expect “Poor Things” to arrive on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in early March, about 90 days after it has been released in cinemas, which is the standard length of time a film hits streaming after a theatrical and digital release.

Internationally, all new Searchlight Pictures films go directly to Disney+ following a theatrical release, but with the stretched-out international release schedule, this will have an impact on when the film will be released. This will likely see the film released on Disney+ sometime in March or April, which is around 90 days from when the movie is released in cinemas.

Disney+ updates daily at the following times:

  • Pacific Time: 00:00 AM / Midnight
  • Eastern Time: 03:00 AM
  • UK: 08:00 AM
  • Sydney, Australia – 19:00 PM

Sometimes films can arrive a few minutes later as the servers update. The Disney+ front page usually updates about an hour later.
