The Best That Never Was

In 1981, Marcus Dupree was the most sought-after high school senior in the country, but his short college football career was littered with oversized expectations, controversy, injury and conflict.

The Book of Manning

A father-and-son story written into the pages of football folklore, it can be argued that no family has had more influence on a sport than the Manning’s. Revealing interviews with Archie, Olivia, Cooper, Peyton and Eli Manning.

Brian and the Boz

In some ways, Barry Switzer and Brian Bosworth were made for each other. The Oklahoma coach and the linebacker he recruited to play for him were both outsized personalities who delighted in thumbing their noses at the establishment. And in their three seasons together (1984-86), the unique father-son dynamic resulted in 31 wins and two Orange Bowl victories, including a national championship, as Bosworth was awarded the first two Butkus Awards. But Bosworth’s alter ego — “The Boz” — was taking over. Eventually, he went on a downward spiral and became known as an NFL bust. In “Brian and The Boz,” the dual identities of Brian Bosworth are examined as he looks back on his life and passes on the lessons he’s learned to his son.

Catholics vs. Convicts

On October 15, 1988, Notre Dame hosted the University of Miami in what was arguably one of the greatest games in college football history. It was tradition vs. swagger, the No. 4-ranked Fighting Irish versus the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes, one coaching star, Lou Holtz, versus another, Jimmy Johnson. But the name still attached to the contest came from a t-shirt manufactured by a few Notre Dame students: “Catholics vs. Convicts.”

Fantastic Lies

On March 13, 2006 the Duke University lacrosse team threw a party that not only changed lives and ruined careers, it jeopardized the future of the sport at the school and tarnished the university’s reputation.

The Gospel According to Mac

This 30 for 30 documentary examines Bill McCartney and his sometimes-controversial mixture of American football and evangelicalism as Colorado Buffaloes head coach in the 1990s.

Pony Excess

From 1981-1984, a small private school in Dallas owned the best record in college football. The Mustangs of Southern Methodist University (SMU) were riding high on the backs of the vaunted “Pony Express” backfield. But as the middle of the decade approached, the program was coming apart at the seams.

Trojan War

When Pete Carroll took over the football program at USC after the 2000 season, the once-great Trojans were under siege. But thanks to Caroll’s football knowledge, upbeat personality and recruiting skills, Southern Cal was soon back atop the college football world as home attendance skyrocketed. Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush won Heismans, and the Trojans put together a 34-game winning streak. As it would be later discovered, though, the program was committing sins that would result in lost scholarships, victories and one of those Heismans. But those revelations didn’t come until after the national championship game in the 2006 Rose Bowl between USC and the University of Texas. Featuring interviews with Carroll, Leinart and others inside the USC program at the time, “Trojan War” looks at Carroll’s nine-year USC reign through the prism of that game, considered one of the greatest in college football history. It was also the beginning of the end.

Youngstown Boys

Filmmakers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist offer this exploration of class and power dynamics in college sports through the parallel, interconnected journeys of one-time dynamic running back Maurice Clarett and former elite head coach Jim Tressel.
