Disney Developing “Medusa” Movie
Disney has had plenty of success with movies based on iconic villains, such as “Cruella” and “Maleficent”, but now it is looking to bring the story of Medusa to the big screen.
Based on classic Greek mythology, Medusa is also called Gorgo or the Gorgon, who was one of the three Gorgons. Medusa is generally described as a woman with living snakes for hair; her appearance was so hideous that anyone who looked at her was turned to stone.
Over the years, the character has appeared in many stories based on Greek mythology, including the Disney+ Original series, “Percy Jackson And The Olympians” and the “Hercules” animated series, along with the “Clash of the Titans” movies.
According to Deadline, this new film is being developed by Seven Bucks, which is owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and is behind hits like “Jungle Cruise” and the Disney+ Original series, “Behind The Attraction”, along with “Jumanji” and “The Smashing Machine”. Dwayne will also be an executive producer, along with his Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing for the label. Matt Smith is also producing under Electro Corduroy Entertainment.
Michael Montemayor is writing the first draft of a live-action movie. He’s currently working on the upcoming “Tangled” live-action remake and “Cinderella” spin-off movie, “Stepsisters”.
As with any project still in early development, we don’t know too much more about it, such as when production might begin, who will star in it, who will direct it or when it’s likely to be released in cinemas and on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: Taking one of the most iconic Greek characters and doing a live-action version sounds like an interesting take, especially as we’ve seen so many remakes and sequels; this version could be a unique take, depending on whether they set it in ancient Greece or in modern times. Though I do think they’ll need to work on a way not to have her hair look too scary, as that might put lots of people with a fear of snakes off from watching it.
