“Welcome To Wrexham” Renewed For A Third Season
With the second season of the popular FX documentary series, “Welcome To Wrexham”, coming to a close this week, Disney has announced that the show has been renewed for a third season and will return in the spring of 2024.
The series follows Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) navigating running the third oldest professional football club in the world. Welcome to Wrexham is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club.
In 2020, Rob and Ryan teamed up to purchase the 5th-tier Red Dragons in the hopes of turning the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The worry? Rob and Ryan have no experience in football or working with each other. From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, Welcome to Wrexham will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it.
In Season 2, Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. “Welcome to Wrexham” is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars guide the future of the town’s historic football club.
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a statement:
“The wild global success of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is a testament to the courage and vision of Rob and Ryan, the dogged spirit of the Red Dragons and the hope and devotion of the people of Wrexham. It’s a story that has only begun to be told and one that everyone can continue to follow along with in the third season. Our thanks to the creative team who captured these thrilling moments and everyone who achieved what seemed impossible only a short time ago.”
“Welcome to Wrexham” is executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma and Jordan Wynn. “Welcome to Wrexham” is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment and Boardwalk Pictures.
With the ongoing actor’s and writer’s strikes over the summer, filming on a third season was already underway, plus “Wrexham” is still in need of an income due to its costs, so would have wanted to continue making the show.
The season finale airs on FX tonight and will be available to stream tomorrow on Hulu in the United States, Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world. The first season, along with the previous episodes of the latest season are also available to stream now on Disney’s platforms.
