Disney’s Freeform has revealed that it has cancelled “The Watchful Eye” after one season, as part of Disney’s cost-cutting measures to save the company over $5 billion dollars, which includes reducing the amount of general entertainment content it makes.

“The Watchful Eye” follows Elena Santos, a young woman with a complicated past, maneuvering her way into working as a live-in nanny for an affluent family in Manhattan. She quickly learns that everyone in the mysterious building has deadly secrets and ulterior motives. What they don’t know, however, is that Elena has some shocking secrets of her own.  The show stars Molino, Warren Christie, Amy Acker, Jon Ecker, Aliyah Royale, Lex Lumpkin, Henry Joseph Samiri and Kelly Bishop.

It was created by Julie Durk (“Grace and Frankie”), who also served as a consultant. Emily Fox (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) is showrunner and executive producer. Ryan Seacrest Productions’ Ryan Seacrest, Nina Wass, Andrea Shay and Jeffrey Reiner served as executive producers, with Reiner (“Dirty John”) directing the pilot. The series was produced by ABC Signature,

The show debuted on the Freeform Channel and on Hulu earlier this year.  It was also released internationally as a Star Original on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world.

With the cancellation of “The Watchful Eye” and “Single Drunk Female” this week, it does leave Freeform with very few original shows left.  Since this show has been cancelled after just one season, it’s very likely that this series could be removed from streaming services around the world at some point in the future, so if you have already started watching it and haven’t finished it, or have been meaning to watch it, you might want to do that sooner rather than later.

UPDATE:  Within hours of the reveal that this show had been cancelled, it was quickly removed from Disney’s streaming services around the world, including Disney+, Star+ and Hulu.  Disney had been planning on removing about $400 million dollars worth of content before the end of June as part of an impairment charge, which basically means the show is written off as a tax write-off.  Disney also cut over $1.5 billion dollars worth of content including “Willow” in May.
