“The Sound Of Music” To Be Re-Released On Ultra HD Digital & Blu-Ray Disc

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the release of the classic musical, “The Sound Of Music” and Disney has announced that it will be re-releasing the movie on 4K Ultra HD, which has been restored, with remastered sound and hours of bonus features.

Experience Rodgers & Hammerstein’s iconic musical in spectacular 4K Ultra HD, meticulously restored and remastered for its 60th anniversary. Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young woman who becomes governess to the seven unruly children of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Her warmth, charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children—and their father. Featuring unforgettable treasures like “Edelweiss,” ”My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “Do-Re-Mi,” “The Sound of Music” is one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time.

Lovingly restored by Disney’s award-winning film restoration team, the 4K transfer showcases every mountain peak, every twirl, and every soaring note with stunning clarity and richness. It’s “The Sound of Music” as you remember it – more vivid, more moving, and more magical than ever.

The new 4K Version will be released on Ultra HD Digital & Blu-ray disc on September 23rd 2025.

To go along with the re-release of the movie, Disney is going to be hosting a number of special events around the world, which will include theatrical screenings, live concert events, and fan experiences, all of which share the joy of this fantastic film.

Here are the 60th Anniversary Celebration Highlights:

  • North American Stage Tour (Beginning Sept. 5, 2025): Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray), this critically acclaimed production of The Sound of Music will tour more than 80 cities. With fresh staging and a cast of rising stars, this production breathes new life into the enduring tale of Maria and the von Trapp family.
  • Back on the Big Screen in 4K (Sept. 12-17 – U.S. & Beginning Sept. 20 – Internationally): The restored film returns to cinemas worldwide in stunning 4K, thanks to Fathom Entertainment & Trafalgar Releasing. Showings will take place in more than 1,000 cinemas across more than 30 countries. The film also returns to Canada in 4K Sept. 13-14 and 17.
  • Hollywood Bowl Sing-A-Long – Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 20): Join 18,000 fans under the stars for the beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long at the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater, hosted by Melissa Peterman. Costumes welcomed, lyrics provided.
  • 4K Ultra HD Digital & Blu-ray (Sept. 23): For the first time ever, The Sound of Music is available worldwide in 4K Ultra HD Digital & Blu-ray disc. Featuring remastered sound, restored visuals and bonus content.

The film is also available to stream on Disney+, and it’ll likely be a while until this version is fully upgraded to the new restored version.
