Disney loves going back and remaking its classic stories, either as remakes or reboots of its live-action or animated movies and during an interview with THR to promote the new film, “‘Los Frikis’, the co-director Michael Schwartz revealed that they are currently developing a new film for Disney based on the classic “Treasure Island” story.

We’re working on Treasure Island for Disney. It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they ever make it, it would be so fun. It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy.

With the movie’s co-director Tyler Nilson, who also worked together on “The Peanut Butter Falcon”, added:

It has the patina of the 1970s surf world. It’s all there.

The original “Treasure Island” story was released in 1983 by Robert Louis Stevenson. It follows young Jim Hawkins as he stumbles upon a pirate treasure map and embarks on a perilous journey to find it. Along the way, he encounters treacherous pirates, loyal friends, and the alluring dangers of buried riches.

There have also been many other movies and shows made over the last century, dating back to 20th Century Fox making the first version in 1918.   Disney has already retold this story in multiple films, including its original version in 1950, a Muppet version in the 1990s and in the animated movie “Treasure Planet”.   All of these are available to stream on Disney+.

It’s important to note that the project is still in development and might not necessarily be created since not everything Disney has in development makes it to our screens.  As with everything in development, it might be years until it arrives in cinemas or Disney+.

Roger’s Take:  Doing a 1970s version of “Treasure Island” sounds like a different version of the story, especially adding in the surfer element.  Considering how well the new pirates in space story in “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is going down with audiences, maybe a new version will work too.
