During a panel for the upcoming third season of “Star Wars: Visions” at this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration event in Japan, Lucasfilm announced a brand new spin-off limited series for Disney+ featuring longer stories from the “Visions” short series.

The first “Visions” spin-off will be called “Star Wars: Visions — The Ninth Jedi” and will be coming to Disney+ in 2026.

In the original “The Ninth Jedi” short from the first season of “Visions”, told the story of a daughter of a lightsaber-smith, who is pursued by dark forces while on a dangerous mission to deliver newly crafted lightsabers.  These lightsabers change colour depending on one’s Force.

Kenji Kamiyama, who was the writer and director of “The Ninth Jedi”, took to the stage at Star Wars Celebration and told the crowd:

“I made a short story called ‘The Ninth Jedi’ during Volume 1.  Director Shiotani is making one more film this time [“Child of Hope”], and it ends with Kara’s departure to look for her father in the first short film.  What in the world was the reason for such lightsabers.  I think it will be a story where those secrets will be told.”

Kamiyama will be working as supervising director on the new “Star Wars: Visions Presents — The Ninth Jedi” limited series.

No other details on the upcoming spin-off series have been announced, so expect to hear more about this show next year.

Roger’s Take: I think the idea of taking some of the popular “Visions” shorts and expanding them out into their own series sounds like a fun idea, especially as these stories are very different from the typical Star Wars universe.  Letting “Visions” be its own separate thing, similar to Marvel’s “What If”, is a great expansion of the franchise for Disney+, since die-hard fans can enjoy it, without burning out the general audience.
