“Star Wars: A New Hope” To Be Re-Released For 50th Anniversary
2027 will mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the very first Star Wars movie, which was released in cinemas on May 25th 1977, and the success of this movie not only launched a massive franchise that would lead to multiple sequels, along with live-action and animated shows for Disney+.
“Star Wars: A New Hope” tells the story of Luke Skywalker, who begins a journey that will change the galaxy in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Nineteen years after the formation of the Empire, Luke is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and the evil Empire.
Disney has announced that it will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of “A New Hope” by re-releasing the movie in cinemas everywhere on April 30th, 2027, for a limited time only to celebrate Star Wars Day.
This is just going to be a part of the celebrations throughout the year, and no doubt, Disney will have plenty of other plans for the anniversary (especially merchandise!).
Roger’s Take: It’s a little odd that Disney is announcing it’s re-releasing the original film again in cinemas nearly 18 months in advance, but I suppose Disney wants to build some anticipation for a new generation of fans to discover the joy of watching the original film in cinemas and to give long-term fans another opportunity to get that special feeling again.
In the meantime, you can watch “Star Wars: A New Hope” on Disney+ now.
