Disney has announced that the upcoming ESPN documentary, “Shohei Ohtani: Beyond The Dream” is going to be released on Disney+ in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada on Friday 17th November 2023, which is the same day as when the documentary will be released on ESPN+ in the United States.

Two legendary baseball players narrate this documentary of Shohei Ohtani: English audio by Pedro Martínez, and Japanese audio by Hideki Matsui. Why does Shohei Ohtani make people so hyped and inspired? This film is an intimate and moving cinematic record of his journey from drafted to Japanese Pro Baseball, becoming a two-way star player in Japan, and to MLB stardom. A faithful portrait of his talent development battle with injuries, and his unique mindset to become a superstar ballplayer breaking all the barriers of race, language, discipline, and culture.

Featuring an unprecedented in-depth series of interviews with Ohtani and the coaches, players, managers and mentors that have influenced him, the documentary takes an introspective look at Ohtani’s illustrious career, from his humble beginnings in rural Japan, through his journey to becoming a two-way player, the start of his professional career with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and his long-awaited transition to the MLB with the Los Angeles Angels.

Throughout the documentary, Ohtani reflects on his career to date, sharing how he decided to play for the Angels; how he came up with his now famous dream board; what it was like winning the 2023 WBC with Japan; how he overcame past injuries, and so much more.

Ohtani has previously spoken to ESPN about the release of his upcoming documentary:

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to share my journey in this documentary. Hearing the stories shared by my childhood heroes has been truly inspiring. I hope this documentary stands as a testament to the importance of resilience, passion, and self-belief in the pursuit of excellence.”

While there have been many sports documentaries from ESPN released on Disney+ in the past few years, there was a huge slow down in 2023, so hopefully we start to see more of these documentaries released on Disney+, especially since in some countries like the UK, ESPN no longer exists.
