20th Television is developing a new pilot for an upcoming comedy project called “Phoney”, which is a coming-of-age mystery about a teenager, Sonny, who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom – his only parent and his best friend – appears to have been replaced by an impostor.

It was previously revealed that the new comedy pilot will star Connie Britton, who will play Sonny’s sing mom, Ellen.  Connie will also be an executive producer.

Variety has revealed that Sam Nivola has joined the cast and will be playing the lead role of Sonny, who is further described as “the most beloved student at his high school. But the only person who really knows him is his mom.”

Sam Nivola has previously starred in the Netflix series, “The Perfect Couple”, “White Noise”, “Maestro” and the upcoming third season of “The White Lotus”.

Nick Paley is the author, director, and star of the project.  Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg are also executive producing for Charlie’s Production Company, Goddard Textiles, and 20th Television. Andrea Massaro is also a producer on the project.   Originally ABC Signature Studios was developing the project, prior to being merged into 20th Television.

If the pilot is picked up by Hulu for a full series, expect it to be released as a Star Original on Disney+ internationally.
