Jon Watts To Direct Star Wars Episode X
After finding success in a Galaxy Far, Far Away in the Disney+ Original series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, Disney is bringing back Jon Watts to direct the next instalment in the Star Wars saga.
The new film will be the next mainline film in the iconic franchise, Episode 10, which will pick up after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker” and is likely going to see Daisy Ridley return as Rey Skywalker and mark the next chapter for the series.
Jon Watts has already had plenty of success with major franchises, having directed three Spider-Man films, “Homecoming, “Far From Home” and “No Way Home”. He also directed two episodes and co-wrote every episode of the Disney+ series, “Skeleton Crew”, highlighting that he already has some experience with big franchises.
The upcoming trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, who has previously co-created the “Star Wars: Rebels” animated series and the Marvel film, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix”. He began writing the trilogy in 2018, but according to Knight Edge Media, it still hasn’t received the full green light from Disney.
With Star Wars Celebration set for next April, if there’s any official announcement about the upcoming films after the release of “Star Wars: Starfighter” in May 2027, I’d expect Disney to hold off on anything official until then. Lucasfilm has had a bad habit of announcing projects too early and not being able to fulfil them. Back at the Star Wars Celebration in 2023, it announced three new films, none of which have actually gone into production and look likely to have been “delayed”.
Going back to the original mainline films is likely exactly what the franchise needs, rather than keep filling in the spaces between the trilogies and moving the story forward. Personally, Jon Watts delivered one of my favourite Disney+ Star Wars shows and I have full faith he can deliver again.
