Just ahead of the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” hitting our screens, a new spin-off series called “The Testaments” is currently in development for Hulu and Hulu On Disney+.

“The Testaments” is based on a novel by Margaret Atwood, which takes place in the dystopian theocracy of Gilead more than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. The story follows the lives of three women, Aunt Lydia (Dowd), Agnes (Infiniti) and Daisy, whose fates become intertwined as they uncover the secrets of Gilead and the resistance against its regime.

The upcoming series will star Chase Infiniti, who has been cast as one of the three main leads. Chase has previously starred in the legal thriller drama “Presumed Innocent”.  Ann Dowd is also returning to reprise her role of Lydia from “The Handmaid’s Tale”.  Also starring in the show will be Lucy Halliday, who will be playing the role of Daisy, a young Canadian teen whose life is turned upside down when she learns of her connection to the Republic of Gilead.

It’s been revealed that Rowan Blanchard has joined the cast of the upcoming show.  Rowan has previously starred in “Crush”, “Poker Face”, “Snowpiercer”, and the Disney Channel series, “Girl Meets World”.

Blanchard will be playing the role of Shunammite, a pampered teen from a prominent Gilead family whose status affords her a certain level of respect and power amongst her peers.

Bruce Miller will create this new series, serving as the showrunner and executive producer. Other producers are currently finalising their deals. Warren Littlefield from The Littlefield Company will also executive produce, with Amazon MGM Studios as the studio.

Since Amazon MGM Studios is creating the series for Disney’s Hulu, it’s unclear if the show will be released on Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ internationally. The show is available on Amazon Prime Video outside of the United States.

The sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will debut on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States on April 8th with three episodes, then weekly for a finale on May 27th.
