ABC News Studios is teaming up with Neon and Network Entertainment on a new feature documentary called “Brats”, which explores the cultural phenomenon of films such as “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club” that tapped into teenage angst and connected with young audiences in a way that had never been done before. The films earned a cult-like following, but the ‘Brat Pack’ label would impact the young actors’ careers in unexpected ways for decades to come.

The upcoming documentary has been written and directed by Andrew McCarthy, who has previously starred in “Pretty In Pink” and “Less Than Zero”. He went on to say in a statement:

“The Brat Pack has cast a long shadow over my life and career. After all these years, I was curious to see how it had affected my fellow Brat Pack members. What I found was surprising — and liberating.”

In the documentary, Andrew will be speaking with many of the stars of the infamous Brat-era films, including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson, and Timothy Hutton, among others.

The filmmakers of those infamous films will also be featured in the documentary, along with David Blum, who first coined the term Brat Pack in a 1985 New York Magazine cover story.

It will be produced by Derik Murray and Adrian Buitenhuis, along with Brian Liebman and McCarthy executive producing. Neon’s Dan O’Meara and Tom Quinn and Network Entertainment’s Brian Gersh, Paul Gertz and Kent Wingerak are executive producers, along with ABC News Studios’ Victoria Thompson and David Sloan.

“Brats” is currently in post-production and will be released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ later this year. No international release has been announced, but I’d expect, like with most other ABC News Studios documentaries, that this will also be released as a Star Original on Disney+ globally.
