“National Treasure 3” Script Awaiting Approval From Nicolas Cage
While Disney is getting ready to launch its brand new series, “National Treasure: Edge Of History” on Disney+ later this month, there are still rumblings of a third film in the franchise.
Recently, in an interview with, ComicBook.com, to promote the digital release of “Top Gun: Maverick”, the Disney+ series producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that a script for “National Treasure 3” had been written, and they’re just waiting on Nicolas Cage to approve it.
“Let’s hope we’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly,”
In the original film, Benjamin Franklin Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, is obsessed with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest fortune known to man. As Gates tries to find and decipher ancient riddles that will lead him to it, he’s dogged by a ruthless enemy (Sean Bean) who wants the riches for himself. Now in a race against time, Gates must steal one of America’s most sacred and guarded documents — the Declaration of Independence — or let it, and a key clue to the mystery, fall into dangerous hands.
There has been lots of talk about a potential third film in the franchise for a while, but the focus most recently has been on the new Disney+ series, which currently doesn’t feature Nicolas Cage.
Back at the San Diego Comic-Con, “National Treasure” co-creator Marianne Wibberley told Deadline that they:
“We’re going to beg and plead and whatever. We’ll have him in two seconds. He’s our favorite actor out of everyone. We pitched him as Ben Gates before he was Ben Gates. He was our first choice.”
The new Disney+ series focuses on a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. During the panel, executive producers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley shared their vision for the reboot of the smash hit franchise and how incredibly thrilled they are to showcase this dream cast for the series, which also includes Academy and Tony Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. It was previously announced that Justin Bartha would also be returning as a guest star in the series, reprising his role as Riley Poole.
The first two National Treasure films are available to stream now on Disney+ and its expected that more details on the upcoming Disney+ Original series, “National Treasure: Edge Of History”, will be revealed during the Disney’s Epic Entertainment Showcase: The Musical: The Extravaganza! panel on Saturday 10th September 2022.
