Later this month, the 23rd season of the hit documentary series, “Life Below Zero” is set to premiere on the National Geographic channel.

At the onset of the winter season, Alaskans face new threats to their survival. But the dangers of the Arctic year have only just begun. Kavik is slammed with a brutal storm as Sue Aikens races to fortify camp. Ricko DeWilde seeks an elusive animal in the Alaskan Interior. The Hailstones must seize an opportunity to fish under the ice. And Johnny Rolfe strives to secure food in the Brooks Range.

The new series will premiere on the National Geographic channel at 9pm on Tuesday 8th October 2024, with the new series taking almost six months before it arrives on Disney+ and Hulu, on March 19th 2025!

However, it looks like this will be the final season of the show, along with the spin-off shows, as one of the show’s stars, Chip Hailstone, confirmed that the show has finished its contract. He also shared a post on X confirming the news:

Well, folks, its official; Life Below Zero has run its course. No contract, No Life Below Zero. It was a fun 12 years and the show won 9 Emmy Awards, and we were on the first to the last episodes. Now onto a sharp and profitable future.

He also further revealed more details in a recent Reddit thread,

I’m in Anchorage and its true, Life Below Zero is out of contract. Finished up here and a day for whatever tomarrow.

9th Emmy award 2024, and the most watched Nat Geo show, so there you go.

Might be that Disney went woke/broke.

I made the announcement on the one and only time I tried to use an Iphone to do such, Hell no, I preferr a laptop and the phone is for our business Hailstone Enterprizes, so at least it has a use.

Im not a cell phone kinda guy anyway.

Thats how it go’s, and dont worry, we are on the last seasons eps, at least 16 of them.

“Life Below Zero” has been one of the cornerstone shows for the National Geographic channel, originally debuting in 2013, but it’s actually created by BBC Studios, which might be one of the major reasons why Disney has decided to cut the show.

Roger’s Take:  As Disney continues its cost cutting across all of its divisions, we are seeing some of the long running National Geographic shows, like “The Incredible Dr Pol” and “Wicked Tuna”, come to a close.  These series existed prior to Disney owning National Geographic, and it seems like they’re slowly moving away from these types of shows.  With the cable business drastically changing, it’s very noticeable that Nat Geo’s content lineup is being drastically reduced.  It also probably doesn’t help that shows like “Life Below Zero” aren’t created and owned by Disney, so they’d rather invest in content they own.  The only good news is that there is at least one more whole season to be released.
