Marvel’s “X-Men 97” Season Two Disney+ Release Window Revealed
One of the biggest hits of 2024 on Disney+ was Marvel’s “X-Men ’97”, which is a continuation of the original nineties animated series, that follows The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.
“X-Men ’97” has been a massive success for Disney+, with both critics and fans enjoying the show, along with the series picking up many different awards including “Best Animated Series” at the Critics Choice Awards.
The head of Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, has recently spoken to Collider to promote the upcoming Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again”, where he was asked about when we will see the second season of “X-Men ’97” arrive on Disney+, to which he replied:
“Season 2 of X-Men ‘97 is going to be in ‘26. We’re working on it now. It’s exciting. That world of the ‘90s is just… Honestly, Steve, I can’t believe they let me make it. I grew up at Marvel, as you know, clocked a lot of time here, and I feel like I used a lot of currency to revive this thing that I loved watching after school. So, the fact that we get to play in that universe with those actors is honestly why I went into this business in the first place.”
Disney has already greenlit a third season of the animated series, which will likely be a few years away from arriving on Disney+, though Marvel is trying to shift strategies to getting more shows to be released annually, leaving less time between seasons. Brad has also said that “X-Men ’97” and “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” are the studio’s top priorities for “get[ting] to a place where we can reliably have very strong seasons every year”.
The show has also gone through a major creative shift following the removal of the show’s head writer, Beau DeMayo following an investigation by Marvel that led to “egregious” findings. Beau had already written the second season but has been replaced by Matthew Chauncey, who has also worked on Marvel’s “What If?” and is expected to rewrite or rework the scripts for the second season.
“X-Men ’97” features a voice cast that includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.
Roger’s Take: It’s obvious that Marvel is trying to change its focus for Disney+ shows based on more established characters like Spider-Man, Daredevil, and the X-Men rather than lots of single limited series that feature lesser-known characters and aren’t bringing in the viewers in the same way.
With the creative upheaval for “X-Men ’97”, it was bound to result in some delays, but with Marvel becoming much more focused on delivering a constant stream of new seasons of popular shows, hopefully, they’ve ironed out the issues, and we can enjoy new episodes of our favourite shows more often.
The first season of “X-Men ’97”, along with the original animated series from the 90s, are available to stream on Disney+.
