Marvel’s “Nova” Disney+ Series Inspired By Star Trek & Battlestar Galactica
Recently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that development is currently underway on a new series for Disney+ based on the popular comic book character, Nova, aka Richard Rider, who is a member of the Nova Corps until the Annihilation Wave destroyed them all, leaving him imbued with their combined power. Guided by the super-intelligent Worldmind computer, Richard Rider wages a one-man battle for justice as Nova.
The new “Nova” series is likely to be three or four years away from being released on Disney+ since Marvel has drastically reduced the number of shows it is releasing to reduce costs and superhero fatigue while also increasing the quality.
Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum has recently revealed on the Phase Zero podcast that Nova will draw inspiration from two classic space-themed franchises.
The Nova that’s being developed right now, it’s an amazing ensemble piece. I shouldn’t say too much, but it’s like a great case of characters that’s got shades of Star Trek , shades of Battlestar Galactica, but also has, it also feels like if you know those comics, you know how heated, let’s say, that Richard Rider kind of world can get, and it certainly embraces all of that.”
We’ve already seen the Nova Corps introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they were a major part of the first “Guardians Of The Galaxy” movie, so it’s always felt like more of a “when” rather than an “if”, Nova would be introduced.
Brad also revealed that Nova will be “an amazing ensemble piece,” with a “great cast of characters.” This could open the door for some interactions with new characters or possibly even bring back some of the Guardians cast for a team-up.
Roger’s Take: If Marvel is planning on keeping Nova in space, rather than bringing him to Earth, it makes sense to lean more toward sci-fi nature, with interactions with different aliens and planets. This will also allow the series a way of feeling very different from the more grounded shows like “Daredevil” and offer something a little different. Unfortunately, I don’t think we are going to be seeing “Nova” on our screens for a few more years, since they’ve already got “Ironheart”, “Daredevil: Born Again”, “Wonder Man” and “Vision Quest” scheduled for 2025 and 2026. But I’m also glad they are spending more time developing this show and not rushing it.
