Next week, Marvel Television will release the first two episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which is a revival of the popular former Netflix original series “Daredevil”.

The new series sees Charlie Cox return as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.

The series also stars Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal returning as “The Punisher”.

Originally, the show was going to be a soft reboot of the Netflix series, with Marvel using the Multiverse as a way of making it similar but different,  However, during production, Marvel Studios decided to change courses and set the show up as a direct sequel to the former Netflix Original series.

This change resulted in a shift in how Marvel Studios treated not just the “Daredevil” show, but also “The Defenders”, “Luke Cage”, “Jessica Jones” and “Iron Fist”.  These shows are being moved into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline since the shows do reference the events of the “Avengers” film.

With the return of Daredevil and The Punisher, this has led to many fans speculating about other possible returns for the “The Defenders”.  During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios’ streaming and TV boss Brad Winderbaum revealed that bringing back Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Iron Fist/Danny Rand is something the studio is “very much exploring.

“I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you that it’s so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox.  Obviously we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It’s dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

Roger’s Take: With Marvel Studios drastically changing its strategy towards television shows, instead of large-scale shows on a movie blockbuster budget, we’ve seen Marvel return to more traditional television production methods and budgets to create shows like “Echo” and “Agatha All Along”.

With “The Defenders” being street-level superheroes, their shows can be made on a much smaller budget, which fits the directive by Disney executives for cheaper shows to make the streaming service more profitable.  It’s already been proven that “The Defenders” work on a smaller scale, and bringing back these characters for a new multi-season “Defenders” show or just for some cameos in future “Daredevil” seasons is no doubt something they are considering.

The MCU has struggled with the expansion of new shows for Disney+, but it’s looking more likely that Marvel is now looking at making fewer shows on a smaller budget and less connected to the big blockbuster movies.  Making “The Defenders” a cornerstone of Disney+ could fix many of their problems.

“Daredevil: Born Again” will premiere on Disney+ on March 4th 2025, and the previously released shows “Daredevil”, “The Punisher”, “The Defenders”, “Luke Cage”, “Jessica Jones” and “Iron Fist” are also available to stream on Disney+.
