Hulu Picks Up “Phoney” For A Series
Last year, it was revealed that 20th Television was developing a new pilot for an upcoming comedy project called “Phoney”, which is a coming-of-age mystery about a teenager, Sonny, who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom – his only parent and his best friend – appears to have been replaced by an impostor.
It’s been revealed by Deadline that Hulu has picked up the pilot for a series, which will star Connie Britton, who will play Sonny’s single mom, Ellen, who is also the principal of his high school. Connie will also be an executive producer.
Sam Nivola will be playing the lead role of Sonny, who is the most beloved student at his high school. But the only person who really knows him is his mom.
Nick Paley is the author, director, and star of the project. Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg are also executive producers for Charlie’s Production Company, Goddard Textiles, and 20th Television. Anthony King has also joined the project as a co-showrunner and executive producer. Andrea Massaro is also a producer on the project. Initially, ABC Signature Studios was developing the project, prior to being merged into 20th Television.
No other details on “Phoney” have been released, such as when we would likely see it released. As with other Hulu Originals, we should expect to see it released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
