Disney’s FX is currently developing a new 10-episode limited series period drama that is based on the best-selling novel by James Clavell, “Shōgun”, which is set in feudal Japan, and charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai. John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English pilot major ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him. Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, is at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals. And Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonourable family ties, must prove her value and allegiance.

During this week’s Television Critics Association Summer Press tour event, FX chief John Landgraf, revealed that production wrapped in June, and that the new series will be released in 2023.

“We wrapped physical production on the limited series Shōgun in June, which was by far our biggest and most ambitious production ever. We still have a long process of post-production ahead of us but the show looks fantastic and will debut later next year.”

This new series will star Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis. The new limited series was announced during December’s Investor Day event in 2020, Disney revealed, and it was revealed that the series would be coming to Hulu and to Disney+ as a Star Original.

It is adapted by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo. Tim Van Patten, the highly decorated, award-winning producer of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, and the director of the pilot and early episodes of “Game of Thrones,” has signed on to bring this giant and visceral canvas to life.

The series was originally greenlighted in 2018, but was put on hold to make the project bigger.

Are you looking forward to “Shōgun”?
