Disney is once again diving into its vault for a new remake as 20th Century Studios is developing a new version of one of its popular westerns from the 1950s, “The Gunfighter”.

The original film follows Notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo, who rides into town to find his true love, who doesn’t want to see him. He hasn’t come looking for trouble, but trouble finds him around every corner.

According to Deadline, Ethan Hawke has joined the project and is co-writing the script with his writing partner Shelby Gaines. It’s unknown if Ethan will also director or star in the new film, since currently his deal is only to help write and produce the project.

While Ethan is best known for being an actor, having starred in “Training Day”, “Tesla”, and the Disney+ Original series, “Moon Knight”, he has also written and produced “Wild Cat” and “The Good Lord Bird”.

The project is still in the very early stages of development, so no other details such as casting, release date or if it will be a theatrical or streaming release, have been revealed yet.

Ethan has previously spoken on the TCM Special “2 For 1” about his love of the original 1950s film.

Roger’s Take: We’ve had a few Western films and shows released over the past few years, and while I don’t think we’ll ever return to the old days of the 1950s, with the recent success of shows like “Yellowstone,” there is no doubt a market for more traditional Americana-type stories. It’ll be great to see 20th Century Studios leaning in on some different genres to give us something different.
