A couple of years ago, Disney revealed it was developing a brand new instalment in the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” film franchise, but that it would see Margot Robbie taking over the reins.  Over the years, we’ve heard very little about the project until last month, when during a interview with Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie said:

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,”

This comment indicated that the project was no longer going to be happening, but apparently, according to the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the film is still “alive” at Disney.  As during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, about the release of “Top Gun: Maverick”, Bruckheimer, said development on the project is still underway.

It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.

When asked about why the sixth “Pirates Of The Caribbean” film has gone through so many iterations, he said:

Oh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.

The new film is apparently being written by Christina Hodson, who has previously worked with Margot on DC’s film, “Birds Of Prey”.

With five films in the franchise, it’s not surprising to hear more films are still in development, though now with Johnny Depp’s court case now over, he could still return to the franchise, as Jerry would like him back.

I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.

All five previous films in the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise are available to stream on Disney+ now.
