Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” Sequel No Longer Moving Ahead
After the huge box office success of the live-action reimagining of the popular Disney theme park attraction, “Pirates Of The Caribbean”, Disney has created many films based on other theme park attractions, such as “The Haunted Mansion” and “The Jungle Cruise”.
Back in 2021, Disney released “Jungle Cruise” in cinemas around the world, as well as on Disney+ Premier Access, due to the pandemic still causing problems with theatres, resulting in the film just pulling in $220.9 million at the box office and over $66 million over its first 30 days on Disney+ Premier Access. Though this still puts the movie barely over the initial $200 million budget.
Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ is a rollicking thrill ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila, his ramshackle but charming boat, to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities.
Just after the opening weekend, Dwayne Johnson revealed on social media that Disney was already developing a sequel to “Jungle Cruise”, but during a recent interview with EW, the movie’s stars, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, confirmed that the sequel is no longer happening.
“I don’t think so. I think when Disney came under new leadership, they just shifted coming out of COVID. COVID shifted our business in a lot of ways. I think they looked at that property and thought, we did it once, not sure if we should revisit it again. Despite whether or not our chemistry was great.”
Emily Blunt also added:
“they did not want to set sail again, and that’s fine.”
“Jungle Cruise” is available to stream on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as its been many years since the movie came out and because it didn’t exactly blow the box office up due to being released in the middle of the pandemic, it’s not surprising that Bob Iger decided they didn’t want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on making a sequel, when that money could be used for other projects.
