For Disney+ subscribers in the United States, today marks a big shift in tone, as the streaming service is altering its parental controls, to allow Rated R and TV-MA content, starting with a number of mature Marvel live-action series including “The Defenders”, “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones”.

This new update will bring the US parental controls in line with other countries such as the UK, Canada and Australia, which have had access to mature content within Disney+ for over a year.

Today, when you open up Disney+, if you haven’t updated your app for a while, you might be presented with a message to update your app on your device.

Then you will be presented with your profile login screen, where you will want to select the primary account holder and will need to enter that account’s password.  From here you’ll be asked if you want to set a pin code for the account.  If you have children in the house, you’ll want to set a pin code, if you haven’t already done so.

You will then be prompted with a brand new screen asking if you would like to access more content.  This screen is highlighting that Disney+ will be getting more content aimed at adults and is showcasing the titles currently available including “Hamilton”, “Black-ish” and “The Wonder Years”.

After clicking continue, you will be prompted if you want to accept access to a higher maturity setting, to unlock the entire Disney+ library.

After this, you will then enter Disney+, which will now have access to mature titles like “Daredevil” and “Luke Cage”.

If you don’t want to have access to the mature titles, simply select “Not Now” and your account will stay set at TV-14.

Should you wish to go back and change this later and want to adjust a profile’s content ratings, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to your profiles and select Edit profiles
  2. Select the profile you’d like to edit
  3. Under Parental Controls, select Content rating
  4. Enter your password
  5. Choose the content rating you’d like to set and Save

You’ll also want to check out any other profiles within your Disney+ to make sure they are set appropriately, including adult and children’s accounts, so they have access to the content you deem appropriate.

Currently, Disney+ in the United States only has access to a handful of mature titles from Marvel, but Disney is planning to add more general entertainment content in the future, but hasn’t announced any details on how or when.  Instead, using the Marvel shows to usher in the new parental controls.

Robust parental controls ensure that Disney+ remains a suitable viewing experience for everyone in the family. Subscribers can set access limits on mature content and create PIN-protected profiles alongside the already existing Kids Profiles to give parents and guardians peace of mind.

Are you looking forward to seeing more mature content on Disney+?
