Disney+ To No Longer Be Supported On Some Older Apple Devices

Disney has contacted selected Disney+ subscribers, informing them that support for older Apple TV streaming boxes will be coming to an end on December 1st 2025.

THE DISNEY+ APP WILL NO LONGER BE SUPPORTED ON YOUR OLDER APPLE DEVICE

Dear Member

Thank you for being part of the Disney+ community. We’re so glad you’ve enjoyed everything we have to offer, from blockbuster movies, to brand-new series and exclusive Originals.

Because some devices, especially older smart TVs or streaming devices, may lack the technical capability to run the latest Disney+ app or meet the necessary performance standards for streaming, from time to time, it’s necessary for us to withdraw support for older devices.

Starting December 01, 2025, the Disney+ app will no longer be supported on select devices.

While the Disney+ app may no longer work, users with older Apple devices may still stream Disney+ via AirPlay from another device.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any information directly on which exact Apple devices will be impacted.  Currently, Disney+ supports Apple iPhones and iPads with iOS 16.5 or later, and Apple TV HD (4th generation or later)/ Apple TV 4K running tvOS 16 and later.

With Apple bringing out a new generation of iPhones and iPads each year, it’s common that older models eventually stop receiving updates, eventually forcing users to upgrade to newer ones.

The first generation of Apple TV launched in 2007 and saw four different versions released, before being updated to a 4K generation in 2017.  It should also be noted that Apple is launching a brand-new version of the Apple TV in November, which will be the fourth generation of the 4K model and will include a more powerful processor, a camera for video calls, and other features.

The Disney+ app is set to get a major upgrade soon, adding more features and incorporating more ESPN and Hulu content, ahead of Hulu’s full integration into Disney+ in the United States.

Roger’s Take: If you’ve got one of these emails, it’s worth checking which device model you’re currently using to access Disney+, especially if multiple devices are in use in the household, as only one might be affected.   While this will no doubt be annoying for users with devices no longer being supported, this is standard for all electronic devices that use the internet, as continued updates reach a point where the legacy device might not be able to run the apps without problems, or that development has ceased because less people are using these older devices, to warrant continued support from the device makers and Disney+ support.
