Disney+ will be getting a massive upgrade in many countries including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and across Europe on February 23rd with the addition of “Star”.  “Star” is Disney’s new general entertainment brand that will include content from 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, FX, ABC and more.

Launching with over 75 TV series, more than 270 movies and a slate of 4 exclusive Star Originals, new titles will be added to the service each month from Disney’s creative studios, including Disney Television Studios (20th Television and ABC Signature), FX Productions, 20th Century Studios and more.

Introducing Star Originals

From launch, Disney+ will become the exclusive home of Star Originals. Titles streaming on Disney+ in the UK & Ireland include crime thriller Big Sky from visionary storyteller David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing); Love, Simon spin-off series Love, Victor written by the film’s original writers Isaac Aptaker (This Is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us) and adult animated sitcom Solar Opposites, co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and Mike McMahan (ex-writer’s assistant on Rick & Morty). Drama series Helstrom, executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski along with Karim Zreik and Jeph Loeb, will also be available at launch. Other projects premiering in 2021 are premium series Dopesick and The Dropout, new content from the Kardashian Jenners as well as a slate of FX originals, including The Old Man.

More of what subscribers love, plus more to discover

Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream more of what they love. From fan-favourite TV series like Grey’s Anatomy, 24, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Lost and Family Guy, Star will offer a range of titles for everyone and every mood, with more titles added weekly.

FX’s innovative comedy and Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Atlanta by Donald Glover, ABC’s Emmy Award and Golden Globe-nominated comedy series black-ish starring Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Yara Shahidi, Shonda Rhimes’s critically-acclaimed legal drama Scandal and feminist comedy Dollface created by Jordan Weiss will also be available for subscribers to watch.

Plus, award-winning movies available at launch include The Favourite, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Grand Budapest Hotel, along with classics such as Pretty Woman, Die Hard 2, The Devil Wears Prada, and Moulin Rouge.

Robust parental controls

To make sure Disney+ remains suitable for audiences of all ages and the experience parents expect, new parental controls launching on 23 February will include the ability to set limits on access to content for specific profiles based on content age ratings and the ability to add a PIN to lock profiles with access to mature content.

Jan Koeppen, President, The Walt Disney Company EMEA: “Star will be an integral part of Disney+, making it bigger, bolder and even more exciting. The arrival of hundreds of TV series and movies including our exclusive Star Originals will make Disney+ the premier destination for high quality entertainment with something for everyone. Needless to say, all this comes with parental controls to give parents that peace of mind.”

Star on Disney+ will be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland plus Australia, New Zealand, and Canada beginning 23 February. Content under the Star brand will vary by market.

UK customers can currently subscribe to Disney+ for £5.99 per month, or £59.99 annually (annual price available at most retailers). Full details on how to subscribe available on Disneyplus.com. From 23 February, Disney+ will cost £7.99, or £79.90 annually. Current prices for existing subscribers (prior to 23 February) will be honoured for six months, with the price change taking effect on the monthly or annual renewal date following 22 August 2021.

And there is expected to be many more shows and movies announced as there will be over 400 titles added to Disney+ via Star on February 23rd and a total of 1000 extra titles to be added within the first year.

It’s important to note that there might be some regional differences in the shows and movies available due to existing deals.

And unfortunately, Disney+ in the United States and Latin America won’t be getting Star, since in the US, Disney has Hulu for this content and in Latin America, Disney is going to be releasing Star+ as its own service, which will also include sports.

What do you think of this lineup of content for Star?

This is a very, very strong starting list. Yes, there are some big notable omissions such as the Alien films, the Predator films and the first Die Hard. However, I don't really mind that as it leaves some things to look forward to in the coming weeks.

My guess is because they are still on NOW TV

I thought Cleveland Show is coming too.

Yeah it is. It’s listed within the star logo that Disney+ UK posted on Instagram and at the top of the article.
