Disney+ Original “Goosebumps” Cancelled After Two Seasons

For fans of the “Goosebumps” series on Disney+, which is based upon R.L Stine’s worldwide bestselling Scholastic series, that has over 400 million books in print across 32 languages, unfortunately, this Halloween season, we won’t be getting a third season, as according to Variety, the show has been cancelled.

The first season of “Goosebumps” follows a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle – while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents’ past.

The second season tells the story of what happens when twins Devin and Cece are sent to spend a summer in Gravesend, Brooklyn, with their divorced dad, scientist Anthony Brewer. They must band together with new friends to save the neighbourhood from a long-dormant threat.

No details on why the show has been cancelled have been revealed, but I’d guess that since the show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and based on a franchise that Disney doesn’t own, Disney decided it wants to focus on its own franchises.

While low viewership is usually a reason for most cancellations, the first season of the show was a big hit for Disney+ and Hulu, with the show on a whole, pulling in 75 million hours viewed combined in the United States and an additional 43 million hours viewed across 16 international markets.

As with any cancelled show, I’d always recommend watching it as soon as possible, whether for the first time or a repeat viewing, since Disney tends to remove cancelled shows from Disney+ to save money.

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Sony Pictures Television is planning to shop the show to other outlets and explore different creative directions for the franchise, so it’s likely that this is not going to be the last time we see “Goosebumps” on our screens.
