Disney+ Adds Oscar Short-Listed Animated Short “Retirement Plan”
Just ahead of this year’s Academy Awards, Disney+ has added a new animated short film called “Retirement Plan” onto Disney+ in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
This short tells the story of Ray, who, in the throes of his overstimulated, energy-poor midlife, fantasises about everything he’d love to do in retirement, once he finally has the “time.”
“Retirement Plan” stars Domhnall Gleeson, who recently starred in “The Paper” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, and he is also an executive producer on the film, along with Andrew Freedman and Julie Murnaghan.
Dublin-based filmmaker John Kelly co-wrote the short with New York-based writer Tara Lawall, who said in a statement to Deadline:
“We weren’t thinking about a wider audience when making this film, we just wanted to tell a personal, slightly esoteric story that made us laugh, think and feel a bit wobbly. To see it connect with so many people, and now reach the Oscar shortlist, is unimaginable.”
The animated short film has already been shortlisted for this year’s Oscars and has already won a number of awards, including the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award in the Animated Short Competition at SXSW and the Best of the Festival Award at Palm Springs International ShortFest.
This is the latest short to be added onto Disney+ in the UK and Europe this week.
