“Cruel Summer” Returning For A Third Season
It’s been almost two years since Disney cancelled “Cruel Summer” after two seasons, but it looks like the show could be returning to our screens, as according to Variety, a third season is now in development for Hulu/Disney+ and Freeform.
The original series debuted in 2021 and followed two young women: Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance. All signs point to Jeanette’s guilt, but is Kate really who she seems to be? Set over three summers and told through shifting points of view, the series challenges perception and follows how one girl can go from being a sweet outlier to the most despised person in America.
Season one of “Cruel Summer” was an instant success and became Freeform’s most-watched series debut ever, averaging 3.81 million multiplatform viewers in the first week. This led to a second season being released in 2023, but it went in a different direction with a whole new cast as it went down an anthology route.
This new direction didn’t go down well with viewers, which is why the new season will bring back one of the main characters from the first season, Kate Wallis, who was played by Olivia Holt.
She’ll be an executive producer on the new season. Cori Uchida and Adam Lash are going to be working as showrunners and executive producers on the third season, with Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple also returning to executive produce via Iron Ocean.
Since Lionsgate TV is the studio behind the show, it’s unclear if a third season of “Cruel Summer” would be released on Disney+ internationally, as it was released on Amazon Prime Video in many countries around the world.
As the show is still in early development, it might be a while until we see it arrive on Hulu/Disney+ and Freeform in the United States, if it does actually get made.
The previous two seasons of “Cruel Summer” are available to watch now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Amazon Prime Video around the world.
