“Cocomelon” Moving From Netflix To Disney+
Disney+ is known for its vast collection of shows and films for children, with shows like “Bluey”, “Spidey and His Amazing Friends ” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” regularly being some of the most popular available, not just on Disney+ but across all streaming services.
Now, Disney is looking to expand its offerings even more, as one of the most popular kids’ shows of the last few years, “Cocomelon”, is going to be moving from Netflix to Disney+ in January 2027
The show is set in the town of Cocomelon and follows baby JJ and his siblings, who, in each episode, go on fun everyday adventures with nursery, play, exploration, and learning situations that any preschooler could relate to. Fun, relatable stories set to toe-tapping songs.
Netflix has decided not to renew its contract with Moonbug Entertainment for the show, leading Disney to swoop in and pick up the popular kids’ show. It will undoubtedly help fill out Disney’s roster of franchises.
This new deal is for global SVOD rights to the existing seasons, along with future seasons of “Cocomelon” and eight seasons of the spin-off show, “Little Angel”. The show will continue to be available on YouTube.
Netflix hasn’t renewed its deal due to a drastic reduction in the number of people watching it year over year. While at one point, “Cocomelon” was the most popular preschool show on Netflix, its viewership went down 60% from 2023 to 2024, even with four new seasons being released.
There will also be plenty of interest in the “Cocomelon” franchise in 2027, as Universal will be releasing a new film in cinemas that same year. Netflix will continue to have the streaming rights for Moonbug’s other shows, “Cocomelon Lane” and “Blippi”.
“Cocomelon” has already been a hit on Disney’s streaming services, with a short stint on Hulu from 2020 until 2022 and on Disney+ in some other countries. This data will undoubtedly have helped Disney make a decision regarding the deal.
Moonbug Entertainment is owned by Candle Media, which was co-founded by former Disney executives Kevin A. Mayer and Thomas O. Staggs. They have recently been advising Disney CEO Bob Iger as consultants. Kevin is also behind the launch of Disney+. Both have previously been linked to the role of Disney CEO, so there could be potentially some bigger things in play regarding this new deal.
Roger’s Take: This is an excellent addition to Disney’s preschool roster of popular shows, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the value of the deal has been reduced as viewership has declined and that the show is also available on YouTube, unless Disney was able to outbid Netflix because its known for its kids content, and picking up one of the biggest hits of the last decade will be of value, especially if Disney is able to get a whole new generation of kids interested in the show, when it sits alongside “Bluey”, “Spider-Man” and “Mickey Mouse” on the Disney+ app.
